Other than monitoring and training another important aspect
of training is motivation. Forerunner devices offer an
innovative way to infuse motivation during training sessions
via the Virtual Training Partner. To use this feature all a
user has to do is enter the distance/time, speed or pace of the
Virtual Training Partner. During training the Virtual Partner
is displayed as a figure on the map alongside the current
location of the user. To achieve his goal the user simply has
to beat his Virtual Partner.
Most of the Forerunner models permit data to be uploaded to
their home computer. While the available software can be used
to automatically maintain a history of the workouts and to
analyze the training data in a variety of charts and
tables.
The Forerunner series can offer a wide choice depending upon
the desired set of features and you immediate budget. Entry
level models such as the Forerunner 101 and Forerunner 201
start at a price tag of $115 and $150 respectively and have
sufficient features preset for most casual runners and
cyclists. The Forerunner 101 has a big negative that it does
not have a built-in rechargeable battery.
Among mid-level models the Forerunner 205 and Forerunner 301
boast a high sensitivity receiver which permits the GPS system
to work even with low signal strength often found around tall
buildings or under thick tree cover. Both models feature
multiple workout modes so a user can easily switch between
different exercise modes seamlessly without resetting the unit.
People training for triathlon will love this feature. The
Forerunner 301 includes a Heart Rate Monitor. Both models are
priced at about $200.
On the higher end Forerunner offers the model 305 and 405.
Both of these models are priced around $300 and have high
sensitivity receivers plus the heart rate monitor. These are
designed for the serious athletes and have many advanced
features like competing against the virtual partner or the
users own previous workouts which has the detailed data of
individual workouts stored, advanced connectivity with
computers, touch sensitive bezel to switch screens, optional
Foot Pod accessory for indoor use and multi-sport workouts etc.
Notably, Forerunner 405 allows users to wirelessly share their
workout data with others. This is a very nice feature for
training a team.
