Garmin Forerunner Overview

GPS enabled Forerunner series of devices by Garmin is targeted towards running and cycling enthusiasts. These are highly portable devices designed to be worn on ones wrist during their training sessions. Adding a GPS device to a set of training tools opens up many ways to precisely monitor and analyze training sessions and user's performance. By measuring parameters such as speed, distance, pace and calories burned, the Forerunner devices permit the user to take the guesswork out of their training and monitor their progress more quantitatively.

On the other hand, the ease of use and availability of affordable models ensures that Forerunner can be used by the elite as well as the casual athletes alike.

Other than monitoring and training another important aspect of training is motivation. Forerunner devices offer an innovative way to infuse motivation during training sessions via the Virtual Training Partner. To use this feature all a user has to do is enter the distance/time, speed or pace of the Virtual Training Partner. During training the Virtual Partner is displayed as a figure on the map alongside the current location of the user. To achieve his goal the user simply has to beat his Virtual Partner.

Most of the Forerunner models permit data to be uploaded to their home computer. While the available software can be used to automatically maintain a history of the workouts and to analyze the training data in a variety of charts and tables.

The Forerunner series can offer a wide choice depending upon the desired set of features and you immediate budget. Entry level models such as the Forerunner 101 and Forerunner 201 start at a price tag of $115 and $150 respectively and have sufficient features preset for most casual runners and cyclists. The Forerunner 101 has a big negative that it does not have a built-in rechargeable battery.

Among mid-level models the Forerunner 205 and Forerunner 301 boast a high sensitivity receiver which permits the GPS system to work even with low signal strength often found around tall buildings or under thick tree cover. Both models feature multiple workout modes so a user can easily switch between different exercise modes seamlessly without resetting the unit. People training for triathlon will love this feature. The Forerunner 301 includes a Heart Rate Monitor. Both models are priced at about $200.

On the higher end Forerunner offers the model 305 and 405. Both of these models are priced around $300 and have high sensitivity receivers plus the heart rate monitor. These are designed for the serious athletes and have many advanced features like competing against the virtual partner or the users own previous workouts which has the detailed data of individual workouts stored, advanced connectivity with computers, touch sensitive bezel to switch screens, optional Foot Pod accessory for indoor use and multi-sport workouts etc. Notably, Forerunner 405 allows users to wirelessly share their workout data with others. This is a very nice feature for training a team.
