Is the Garmin Approach G3 a Good Value? Where Can You Get a Great Deal on this GPS-Enabled Golf
Handheld?
Average consumers are finally getting exposed to the GPS treatment and the high accuracy is enough to convince
these people to get a device of their own and make life in the outdoors so much easier. Golfers in particular see
potential in devices like these because they need to see a better view of the golf courses to come up with the best
game plan possible. In order for their needs to be met, a special GPS device that specializes in golf course
rendering is required alongside good GPS accuracy. Garmin believes that it has all the tools to suit their needs
and later came up with the Garmin Approach G3 GPS-Enabled Golf handheld.

Company Overview
Garmin is most popular for their portable handheld and marine GPS devices introduced back in the early 90s. They
later adapted the touchscreen technologies through the release of the Oregon lineup and later followed with a slew
of car GPS devices that are all touch-driven. Garmin is using the success of its Oregon devices to push their
Garmin Approach Golf GPS devices.
Highlights
As of 2010, the Garmin Approach G3 falls in the middle of its Approach lineup and represents itself as the most
affordable GPS-enabled golf handheld.

It has the smaller 2.6-inch diagonal display but it still remains to be bigger than many of the competing golf
GPS models since the G3 lacks many of the buttons.
Garmin fuses its accessibility with portability and durability as it bears waterproof properties and a similar
rugged feel that the Oregon devices have. It houses a high-sensitivity receiver that yields better accuracy in
calculating the yardage to greens, fairways, and hazards even when under the trees.
The preloaded US and Canada course maps make great use of the display with tree line features and hazards visible.
The receiver tracks the location and automatically updates the position as the golfer moves. Users can get updates
to these maps for added improvements without a subscription fee and the device itself complies with the USGA rules.
It even features a digital scorecard that users can use as they play and later view it on a computer.
Drawbacks
There are hardly any serious drawbacks on the Garmin Approach G3 but it is possible to find another device with
similar functionality and lower cost but without the touchscreen features and interface improvements. In short,
golfers that are very much tied to their existing GPS devices may not find a reason to change to a Garmin.
Reception
Many golfers recommend the Garmin Approach G3 over other golf GPS products because of the low cost and lack of
subscription fee. There are some complaints about the screen and how viewable it is under direct sunlight but other
devices suffer worse in this area.
If the device does not have a certain course in its database, contact the Garmin support so they can give you
updates to newer versions that are likely to feature missing or newer courses. Other than that, the G3 is designed
to work out of the box so users can fiddle with the touchscreen features and not worry about hidden fees.
