Is the Garmin Edge 800 a Good Value? Where Can You Get a Great Deal on this GPS Watch?

Garmin is tapping into new niches with its release of the Garmin Edge 800. Unlike the many other GPS devices released by Garmin, this particular model is optimized for bikers and cyclers. This high-sensitivity GPS model features a 2.6-inch touchscreen display making it similar to Garmin's handheld models. Bikers are treated maps that contain bike routes that other cyclists recorded in the past. It also has some features that are common in other Garmin devices like a barometric altimeter.

In terms of price, the Garmin Edge 800 is on the high spectrum putting it in level with other high-end Garmin products like the Garmin Oregon devices for hikers and the Garmin nuvi devices for advanced car owners. Garmin claims that the Edge 800 is the first touchscreen GPS device dedicated for bikers and it is still quite new since it was introduced back in 2010. It is expected for other competing manufacturers to come up with their own advanced bike GPS devices this year.

Accessories

While the Garmin Edge 800 functions rather well as a standalone bike companion, several Garmin-branded accessories significantly enhance the experience. The first accessory is the Garmin GSC 10 Speed/Cadence bike sensor which many other bikers use with their basic Garmin Edge 305 and Forerunner 305 devices.

The GSC 10 works by monitoring your cycling rhythm for later analysis so you can use it for goal tracking as you work out. It records useful statistics like how many pedal strokes per minute.

The second accessory which is the Garmin Premium Heart Rate Monitor works for a broader range of devices including all of the other touchscreen Garmin handheld devices. It comes in the form of a strap that monitors your heart rate and relays that data to your Garmin Edge 800 or compatible device.

Product Details

The Garmin Edge 800 is aerodynamic and water resistant (IPX7) and has a sleek carbon fiber appearance with white or blue accents. It easily mounts to your bike so you can get a good view of the map while you bike. You can store up to 200 waypoints in its memory and it records the last 1000 laps made.

Adding a microSD card increases the capacity while adding a CityNavigator microSD card expands on the maps. It has some basemaps out of the box and you can add more maps whenever needed. All of this information can be shared with others through the Garmin Connect service. This also allows you to view your statistics from any computer connected to the Internet.

Other Notes

Customers have pointed out how accurate the navigation features are and how easy it is to setup for different bikes. The touchscreen combined with the user interface makes this more intuitive for customers to use than the smaller and more basic bike GPS devices.

In order to make the most out of the features, upgrade your Garmin Edge 800 to the latest firmware as it fixes some of the issues that other customers experienced such as teething issues. Overall, the Garmin Edge 800 stands as a key improvement to the Edge series.
