The Forerunner 201 is an entry level models produced by
Garmin. Like its other models the Forerunner 201 is based on
GPS navigation systems and is targeted towards the market
segment involving serious athletes such as cyclists. The
machine collects data involving your speed, distance, time,
pace and the calories that you have burned during your training
session. This data allows users to monitor and analyze their
training and performance in a very convenient manner.

The Forerunner 201 boasts a rich set of features designed
for all levels of users. It is a waterproof, light weight (2.8
ounces) and compact device which is comfortable to wear on your
wrist. The display is large and easy to read. Apart from seeing
current locations the Forerunner 201 permits the user to mark
specific locations or points of interest and to record the path
that he has taken. The user can then retrace these recorded
paths later if so desired. The Auto Lap feature permits the
user to start a new lap automatically after a predefined
distance, whereas the Auto Pause stops the timer if the user
stops or goes below a certain speed.
There are a number of features which are useful especially
for advanced users. For example, Forerunner 201 has an alarm
that can be set to go off if the user goes above or below a
certain pace or reaches a certain distance or time goal. It
also has a powerful history feature which can store Lap history
- such as lap time, lap distance, and average pace - for up to
5000 laps. With free Garmin training center software, the user
can upload the run data on their computer and view the
performance history in terms of individual days or weeks or
their entire workout history. The software calculates summaries
of average speed, calories burned, total time spent running
etc. and displays the analysis in the form of easy to use
interactive graphs and tables.
The Garmin Forerunner 201 comes with a cool new tool called
Virtual Partner. This allows the user to set custom training
standards. To use Virtual Partner, the user presets the time
and distance for the Virtual Partner. During the training
session he can see at a glance how he is keeping up with the
Virtual Partner.
The Forerunner runs on a lithium ion rechargeable battery
that typically lasts 15 hours per charge. The GPS device works
well in most cases though like any other GPS device it requires
a direct view of the open sky in order to catch the necessary
signals. Understandably sometimes it will lose signals around
tall buildings or under a thick tree cover.
