Review of the Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Watch

The Forerunner 205 and Forerunner 305 were introduced by Garmin in 2006 as upgrades to the Forerunner 201 and the Forerunner 301 respectively. Like its previous counterpart, the Forerunner 305 collects data of speed, distance, time, pace and calories burned during a training session and allow the user to monitor and analyze their performance in a very convenient manner. At the same time it retains other features such as the Auto Lap and Auto Pause of the previous version.

The Forerunner 305 has a much improved design when compared to the Forerunner 301. The model 305 is lighter and more comfortable on the wrist. The antenna on this device is placed on the face so it points towards the sky while running. With the new SiRFstar III GPS receiver inside this device it is much more sensitive than the previous version. This feature greatly improves the GPS performance and the device remains locked to the satellites even under thick trees, around tall buildings or even indoors. The buttons are place on the sides and on the face of the watch in a much more convenient manner. The screen resolution is much higher making it clearer than its predecessor. The menu has also been redesigned, making it much more intuitive and easier to access.

With the Forerunner 305 you can capture twelve types of data such as the distance, time, calories burned, heart rate etc. The three screens that appear can be customized to display the data the way you desire allowing you to view the accumulated information during your work out.

The new Forerunner 305 incorporates a new superior ANT wireless technology for its heart rate monitor. It makes the monitor much more reliable and eliminates any possibility of confusing signals of other devices in the vicinity. A new optional accessory added to the forerunner 305 is Foot Pod. It is attached to the shoes of the user and transmits signals wirelessly through ANT technology to the Forerunner. This allows the user to collect accurate distance and pace data while training indoors.

The Virtual Partner feature comes unchanged from the previous version. But unlike previous version you can compete against your own previous runs. Thanks to the new "course" feature. This is much better than running against a preset uniform pace. With multi sports capability you can transition seamlessly between running, biking and any other sport all in the same workout. The workout feature allows you to set a workout program in a variety of ways with different intervals and intensity levels.

The Garmin Training Center software, MotionBased.com and TrainingPeaks.com remain there and allows you to analyze your data with interactive graphs and charts.
