Review of the Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS
Watch
With the Forerunner 405 Garmin has succeeded in bringing out
what can truly be called the first GPS enabled sports watch.
This device integrates functionality with style to create an
elegant, compact sports watch. Like other GPS enabled
Forerunners it tracks data such as the distance, time, speed,
locations, calories burned etc. and allows the user to monitor
and analyze their training and performance in a very convenient
way. It comes in two versions- with or without heart rate
monitor. The one with heart rate monitor tracks your heart rate
displaying the changes as they occur. So with it, you can
target a heart rate zone during your training and make your
training more effective. The device has a high sensitivity GPS
which keeps it connected to the satellite even under thick
trees or around tall buildings.

With the new touch bezel interface you have only to tap the
bezel instead of pushing buttons to choose the various options
like accessing history, starting a new work out or challenging
a virtual partner. Any function can be accessed just by
holding, tapping or running your finger along its bezel.
With the Forerunner 405, Garmin has completely done away
with the connecting cables. The data is transferred
automatically to and from the computer through ANT wireless
technology when the computer is in range. In fact, sharing data
with any device that is ANT compatible is easier than ever. You
just have to select "transfer" to send your information to any
nearby unit. With this feature you can readily share your
workout information and locations with your friends or compete
against your friend's previously stored performance data. The
data and workouts can be shared wirelessly with other users
online as well through Garmin Connect, the online training site
and fitness community established by Garmin or by the optional
Garmin Training Center software.
The Virtual Partner from previous versions comes unchanged
in this version of watch. This feature allows you to establish
specific goals for your training by creating a Virtual Partner
and setting its pace for the run you desire. The speed of the
Virtual Partner can be adjusted in middle of a race without
even stopping. The "course" feature permits you to compete
against any previously stored performance of your own or
perhaps of someone else's. The optional foot pod feature
permits you to collect data concerning distance and speed even
during your indoor workouts. The device easily attaches to the
shoe laces and transfers the data to the Forerunner during your
workout.
The Garmin training center software allows you to analyze
all of your data through interactive graphs, charts and
tables.
