The Forerunner series offers a wide choice depending upon the desired set of features and your particular budget restrictions. Forerunner 50 is an entry level model with a price tag of only $99. This unit serves well as a basic HRM. However, its features can be expanded with optional accessories such as a Foot Pod to measure running data like distance or speed as well as Bike speed/cadence sensor. Data from the Forerunner 50 can easily be transferred to a computer using innovative optional ANT+ wireless technology.

All other HRMs in the Garmin Forerunner series come with a GPS which make them an all-round measurement tool for your various training sessions. On one hand HRM measurements of a user indicate an individual's fitness level while on the other hand the GPS measures the user's performance like distance, time, speed etc. Other than monitoring your vital information and data another important aspect of training is motivation. Forerunner devices offer an innovative way to infuse a new level of motivation during your training sessions. It is know as the Virtual Training Partner. To use this feature all a user has to do is enter the distance/time, speed or pace of the Virtual Partner. During the workout the user competes with his Virtual Partner.

Most Forerunner models permit data to be uploaded to a computer. Then the available software can be used to automatically maintain a history of the workouts and analyze the various bits of training data in a selection of charts and tables.

Priced at about $200 the Forerunner 301 is a mid-level model. It boasts a high sensitivity receiver which permits the GPS to work even with low signal strength such as is often the case around tall buildings or under thick tree cover. Forerunner 301 features multiple workout modes so a user can easily switch between the different exercise modes seamlessly without resetting the unit.

On the higher end the Forerunner 305 and the Forerunner 405 are priced around $300 and are designed for the serious athlete. Their advanced features include high sensitivity receiver, features gear towards competing against the virtual partner or by use of the user's own previous workout data, storing data for individual workouts, advanced wireless connectivity with computers, touch sensitive bezel etc.
