Reviews of the Garmin Oregon 450t

Real Reviews Submitted by Real Users!

My old GPS unit just wasn't cutting it anymore and it was time for a new one. What I was looking for in a new GPS was paperless caching and ease of use - and the Garmin Oregon 450t was exactly what I needed.

The geocaching capabilities of this unit were flawless; all you have to do is hit the "send to GPS" button and the cache name, coordinates and size are sent to the unit instantly. If you upgrade to a paid membership (about $30 annually), then you can also download recent logs, full description, hint and any other important information about the cache, including parking areas and other points of interest. It's a lot easier than a map, in other words.

The only real downside to the Oregon 450t is that no manual is included, but you can easily download one from Garmin's website. To be totally honest though, I haven't even looked at the manual and I've been doing just fine with it so far. The touchscreen is nice and so far, I haven't experienced a lot of signal bounce even in areas with heavy tree cover. However, I have noticed that the battery life seems to be a little on the low side, about eight hours - however, your mileage may vary, since I'm using an older set of rechargeable batteries in my unit. Overall, a great GPS unit and a great upgrade for anyone using an older Garmin.

Pros:

Runs for 8 or more hours on Energizer ultimate batteries.
User friendly interface
Works perfectly well in cold weather (even for deer hunting in -10 F temperatures)
Starts up quickly
Works very well at finding points of interest, both in auto mode (ie gas stations) and recreation mode (ie fishing spots).
Great size, fits comfortably in your pocket
The alarm clock feature is very convenient
Very detailed maps - with the appropriate local maps, it can make anyone a great fisherman
The 3D feature is a great help when hunting, hiking or camping in hilly areas

Cons
The screen is pretty tough, but not so tough that you won't need to get an additional protective screen for it
It can be hard to see the screen under bright sunlight
Occasional glitches which require restarting the unit
It's a little tough to use while wearing gloves (like when deer hunting in subzero weather)
The maps are a little on the pricy side, though they make up for this to some degree by being very detailed. However, the maps which come with the unit aren't as detailed as I would like.

Overall, despite its small faults, this is a GPS unit which I'm very happy with; the positives definitely outweigh the negatives.
