Computer Memory-to Increase Your Knowledge

by David Ross

A computer stores its memory for short term storage in the session and also for long term storage. Memory is defined as the location in which the processor gets its instructions to function and the data that it needs to work on its job.

The more memory you have, the better your computer will perform. So it is important to go in for computers with the maximum memory availability when you buy a new machine. The amount of computer memory you need for your personal computer depends on the kind of tasks you are performing and the sort of software that you have loaded in your system.

A computer makes use of the random access memory (RAM) and the cache memory for managing data in a particular session. Most of the addressable memory is contained in the physical random access memory chips in a personal computer. Cache memory is a very fast access memory region used for data that a processor needs to use frequently.

While a computer is running the CPU processes instructions and the data that it is working with is stored on the RAM memory chips, providing quick access to that data to the processor. Long term data storage is usually kept on disks. Unlike RAM, data that is stored on a hard disk is kept there even when the power to the computer is shut off.

Apart from the hard disk and RAM, there are other types of memory where computers store data. Flash memory is one such example where fixed instructions are usually stored. Unlike read-only memory, flash memory can be re-written. With the recent advent of micro-SD cards and memory sticks, it has become easier for users to transfer data between computers and several electronic devices through USB ports that are now available on almost every computer.

Choosing the right memory for your motherboard is the easiest way to speed up your computer. If your computer is unable to keep up with your fast work pace, then probably the only thing you need to do is upgrade the memory.

A computer uses two kinds of memory to manage data during a session, the Random Access Memory, physical component of your computer, and the cache memory, used to store data that the processor needs immediately. If you have more computer memory available, your computer will function better, therefore it is crucial to obtain a computer with the most memory. Other type of memory available is flash memory; it has no moving parts and is quickly erased. USB memory stick and Micro-SD memory card are perfect examples of this type of memory, they allow you to easily carry and transfer data with simplicity.
