Reviews of the UPro Golf GPS by Callaway

I'm using v.4 of the uPro firmware, and everything is working fine. I haven't had any bad experiences with
my GPS, so maybe Callaway worked out all the problems.
I really love my uPro! Downloads went quickly, and after playing a round, the charge is still around half
full. It's just my opinion, but to me, the free basic mode for all courses is just fine. The PRO mode
might be useful if you're a pro or you're playing a course for the first time. One comes free with the unit,
and I use it at my home course. Having the ability to measure the yardage to and from any point on the course
(including lay-up distances) is nice, but I think I'll probably use the basic mode for most courses.
It's so small and light, I keep it in my pocket during the entire round and I can't even feel it in there.
Pressing the ok button brings up the yardage readings quickly.
Other people I play with use special software with their phones, which works pretty well. But that means
they need to worry about their phones getting damaged. And a lot of them have phones that won't fit
comfortably into their pockets, so they sit in the cart during their games. Sometimes they set them down and
need to go back and get them. I just pull out my uPro, get the yardage and then slip it back into my
pocket. My playing partners are green with envy. :=)
Battery life is another problem with using a phone as a GPS. My uPro has almost half a charge left when
I'm done playing, but the people using phones sometimes have dead batteries before the round's even over.
I added a clear screen protector to reduce the glare from the sun, and got a small camera case to protect my GPS
when it's in my golf bag.
After many hours talking it over with other golfers and some intensive online research, I bought Callaway Golf's
uPro GPS unit. I'm glad I did, because I believe it gives you the best value for your money. Not
needing to pay any annual service fee is a great bonus, but I also think the uPro's Basic Mode gives you just as
much, if not more, information than GPS units that cost more. And some of those other units make you pay a
yearly fee. Whether you're on a new course or one you're familiar with, Basic Mode is more than enough.
You can add courses in the Pro Mode for a modest charge. Although Pro Mode does have some exciting features,
like detailed hazard, fairway and green distances and a fly-over view of each hole, it's more of a novelty than
anything else. You can load your home course in Pro Mode for free, and other courses can be added in Basic
Mode for free. I've learned that's all I really need. Once you load in courses, they're yours to use as
long as they're in your GPS. You can even keep score and statistics if you pay an extra $20.
It takes about an hour to initialize and register your uPro and then load in some courses. It was easy,
because I received clear, concise instructions as soon as I connected my unit to my computer. The whole thing
went very fast considering how large the data files are.
What else could a golfer ask for? The uPro is small, fits into my pocket or a small cell phone case, and
it's easy to use and accurate.
Although the distances are accurate and the unit is fairly intuitive and easy to use, Callaway should put an
instructional video on its website. The Pro Mode's Anypoint capability can help when you're playing an
unfamiliar course, but Basic Mode gives you all the information you'll need on courses you're familiar with.
The Basic Mode colors and graphics are great, but the overhead views in Pro Mode can be a little "hazy" and
sensitive to the time of day and season when the photos were taken. I looked into units from Skycaddie,
On-Par and Sonocaddie before I bought my Callaway uPro. Would I make the same purchase again?
Definitely! Would I recommend Callaway Golf's uPro GPS unit? Absolutely!
